Walk to Tuk

We’re into the nice part of winter in Tulita. The days are reasonably long now, it’s sunny, and there’s plenty of snow. Perfect for skiing, snowmobiling, and generally being in a good mood. There has been a noticeable increase in our energy levels. Although sewing group is on hiatus, there are still plenty of activities going on in town. The recreation director is running boot camp three times a week, there’s yoga twice a week, badminton on Tuesdays, and the arena is open most of the time.

Also, during January and February each year, the NWT Recreation & Parks Association runs an event called Walk to Tuk. Teams log their walk times and need to collectively walk a distance equivalent to the distance along the Mackenzie River from Fort Providence to Tuktoyaktuk (1,658 km). Teams that complete the distance get t-shirts (this year’s colour is purple). This year, I am the team captain for the Meandering Moose – we have already made it to Tuk and are on our way back to Fort Providence. Last I checked, we were wandering through the wilderness somewhere near Port Radium.

Sewing Hiatus

Sewing group has been on hiatus since before Christmas. Sewing group in Tulita runs for intermittent periods of time when there’s an instructor available. So it will probably start up again eventually, but who knows when that will be. Plus, they ran out of moosehide, so I can’t continue with the next steps of my slippers anyways.

In the interim, I had some needles and beads on hand, so I caved to peer pressure and made matching pairs for my uppers. This second round of beading was much faster than the first – only three evenings while watching Netflix.

And now I sit and wait for some more moosehide to come in.

Far Queue Jimmy Choo

I had this great idea.

You see, I saw a news article about my town, Tulita, in the CBC news. It was totally relevant to me and I realised that pretty much any time my town hit the news I’d want to hear about it. So, here was my great idea: I’d set up a google alert, which would send me an email whenever a new article about Tulita appeared on the web. I even set it up so my phone would beep whenever Tulita hit the news.

It didn’t take long. My phone beeped. A google alert notification about Tulita! In fact my google alerts have been beeping regularly, every few days, for the last couple of months.

Turns out there’s a guy named Jimmy Choo. Jimmy Choo makes handbags. For some reason, some crazy weird reason, Jimmy Choo decided to call one of his handbag designs “Tulita”. Now Jimmy’s own website doesn’t have any Tulita handbags on it anymore, but a bunch of shopping websites regularly post the “Jimmy Choo Tulita Handbag”. Here’s what it looks like:

The constant barrage of handbag news got to me. Pretty soon I was screaming enraged obscenities at my beeping phone: “FAR QUEUE JIMMY CHOO”!

I’ve now changed up the google alert to be “Tulita -Choo” (i.e., all “Tulita” articles without the word “Choo” in them). Sanity restored.
