When living in a place with such expensive food, you sometimes stop and wonder “What’s the cheapest food I can buy, per calorie?”. Maybe other people don’t actually wonder that, but in case you have, I’ve crunched the numbers for you.
At first I was thinking it might be the ramen noodles, which you can buy for $24 for a pack of 48. They have 400 calories in a pack, so that works out to 800 calories per dollar. Let’s compare this to other food products sold in town…
- Milk – 200 calories per dollar ($9 for 4L)
- Eggs – 230 calories per dollar ($6 for 18)
- Potatoes – 250 calories per dollar ($7 for 5lbs)
- Pasta – 620 calories per dollar ($12 for 2kg)
- Rice – 660 calories per dollar ($17 for 3kg)
- Flour – 900 calories per dollar ($40 for 10kg)
- Sugar – 1,300 calories per dollar ($12 for 4kg)
And there you have it. Don’t worry, I’m not actually using this information to make grocery shopping decisions.
