What Emma didn’t tell you about Fishing Derby is that she got to see muskoxen! They were hanging out on Bear Rock right near where the fishing was going on. They are only rarely sighted near town – Tulita is not within their traditional home range. They are now found regularly around Deline and have been moving westward, with the occasional sighting around Bear Rock. The locals aren’t super thrilled about this because traditional knowledge says that muskox displace caribou, which are a local food staple. Still, there’s nothing that reminds you that you live in the North quite like muskox in your backyard.

Spring Carnival week just finished and I couldn’t be more relieved. Here are some pictures from the Fishing Derby at Trout Lake.
I caught a trout! It was not only my first time ice fishing, but my first time ever fishing. It only took 4 hours of standing in the cold to earn it. Good times.
