It was 8am and I was in the “study” room on my computer. I could swear I could hear a weird creaking noise from the kitchen. I went to check twice but couldn’t find anything…
Then…
CRASH!!!!

Ok, that time was definitely not my imagination. The entire kitchen cabinet had fallen off the roof/wall. A plate and cup broken, but otherwise no damage and no-one hurt.
The place we live in is owned by the Tulita Housing Corporation, which (I believe) is somehow accountable to the Tulita Land Corporation, which (I believe) is accountable to the Dene band. [There’s also the Metis band in town, who also have a Land Corporation, but no housing corporation? Mental note: I’ve got the figure out and draw up and org chart for this town.]
In any case, I called the housing corp. and they sent their repair guys over. I’d met a couple of them before when they came to fix up our doors that didn’t quite close when we first moved in. Seemed like nice guys. This time, they also sent the boss. He knew what he was doing.
A few reinforcing pieces of lumber around the edges,

a non-trivial number of drywall screws,

and a few hours later our cabinets were back up and ready to use!

I’m impressed. I don’t even want to start thinking about the delays, hassle, bureaucracy and bullshit of getting something like this fixed in the city. Here, some guys who know what they’re doing show up and just get it done.
There’s apparently a real shortage of skilled people up here (or even people who show up to work, more on that in a future post), but if you met the maintenance crew for the Tulita Housing Corp. you wouldn’t know it.
