Caloric Value

Written by:

When living in a place with such expensive food, you sometimes stop and wonder “What’s the cheapest food I can buy, per calorie?”. Maybe other people don’t actually wonder that, but in case you have, I’ve crunched the numbers for you.

At first I was thinking it might be the ramen noodles, which you can buy for $24 for a pack of 48. They have 400 calories in a pack, so that works out to 800 calories per dollar. Let’s compare this to other food products sold in town…

  • Milk – 200 calories per dollar ($9 for 4L)
  • Eggs – 230 calories per dollar ($6 for 18)
  • Potatoes – 250 calories per dollar ($7 for 5lbs)
  • Pasta – 620 calories per dollar ($12 for 2kg)
  • Rice – 660 calories per dollar ($17 for 3kg)
  • Flour – 900 calories per dollar ($40 for 10kg)
  • Sugar – 1,300 calories per dollar ($12 for 4kg)

And there you have it. Don’t worry, I’m not actually using this information to make grocery shopping decisions.

Twisted Delight

Maciek had a hankering for a bread product that he used to eat in Australia called “Twisted Delight”, so we tried to make some at home. You layer the dough with assorted fillings, then roll it up and cut it so it makes a staggered shape, then bake it. It’s pretty tasty and easy to make.
