Planter Box

Our plants have been growing nicely, thanks to the diligent efforts of the Hamlet staff. But now our little baby plants are big enough to live outside, so Maciek built them a planter box and we brought them home.

A lot of our nicely labelled tags wore off or got lost, so there are a few mystery plants in the mix. We are fairly confident that the box contains, at a minimum, tomatoes, zucchini, peas, kale, swiss chard, and peppers. Potentially also cauliflower, spinach, kohlrabi, beets, onions, and rapini. We’ll see what else comes up.

Ideally we’ll be able to find some plastic sheeting to make a sort of mini-greenhouse for the little guys.

Gardening, Take 2

You may have noticed that we never posted an update on our first planting attempt. That is because everything we planted sprouted, and then promptly died. The leading theory is that we didn’t water them enough – the air here is dry enough to suck all the moisture out of the soil, leaving it bone dry after just a few hours. The hamlet recently hosted a planting workshop where they provided the seeds, soil, containers, and said that they’d water everything for us until the plants were big enough to plant outside. Seemed like a good deal.

Once the plants have grown a bit, we can plant them in one of several community greenhouses around town – there’s one near the RCMP office, one near the Pentecostal Church, and they’re planning to put one near the school. We may have also signed up for some kind of community greenhouse club.

We’re planting a small indoor herb garden. We brought a grow light up with us, Maciek picked up some soil in Yellowknife, and my dad mailed us some seeds. Our first attempt includes parsley, dill, chives, rosemary, thyme and sage. We’ll let you know how it goes.
