Muskox on Bear Rock!

Written by:

What Emma didn’t tell you about Fishing Derby is that she got to see muskoxen! They were hanging out on Bear Rock right near where the fishing was going on. They are only rarely sighted near town – Tulita is not within their traditional home range. They are now found regularly around Deline and have been moving westward, with the occasional sighting around Bear Rock. The locals aren’t super thrilled about this because traditional knowledge says that muskox displace caribou, which are a local food staple. Still, there’s nothing that reminds you that you live in the North quite like muskox in your backyard.

Fishing Derby

Spring Carnival week just finished and I couldn’t be more relieved. Here are some pictures from the Fishing Derby at Trout Lake.

I caught a trout! It was not only my first time ice fishing, but my first time ever fishing. It only took 4 hours of standing in the cold to earn it. Good times.

Google Street View

Written by:

Back when I first moved to Tulita, Parks Canada was getting Google Trekker imagery for national parks all over the country, including Nááts’ihch’oh. On my very first trip into the park, the Trekker came along and got hiked around a few locations in the park.

That imagery has been processed, and is now live on Google Maps!

While the team was in Tulita, they also drove the Trekker around town, so Tulita is now on Google Street View!

You can “drive” anywhere highlighted in blue

Here’s your Tulita “Where’s Waldo?” checklist:

  • Two separate occurrences of Faye & Laani in Parks uniform in different parts of town
  • Faye doing a silly walk in each of these occurrences
  • Maciek
  • A wolf
  • A fox
