The Endless Inuvik Pool Debacle

Written by:

Inuvik has a fantastic swimming pool. Or at least it does when the pool is actually open…

The pool has had a multitude of issues ever since it opened. The pool closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic, and the town decided to use the opportunity to do some more substantive repairs. These repairs were supposed to take several months, but issue after issue resulted in the repairs dragging out much longer than anticipated. Here are some of the many anticipated opening date announcements that were made over the following years:

During this closure, I started the “Inuvik Pool Pool”, where people could place bets on when the pool was going to open again. It finally opened on March 18, 2023, after 3 years of being closed, much to the delight of local residents.

Inuvik Pool Pool prizes, including the Inuvik Pool Pool Pool Table, the Inuvik Pool Pool Pool Ball, the Inuvik Pool Pool Deadpool stickers, and the Inuvik Pool Pool Pool Cap.

Of course, it was not to last. After concerns about the sealant coming off of the pool, the pool was closed again on May 10, 2023, less than two months after it re-opened. What was supposed to be a short closure to fix the sealant has already been extended until at least August.

R.I.P. Inuvik Pool.

LARP

Written by:

Maciek and I organized a LARP (live-action role playing game) for that running group we have in town.

All good quests start at a dark and dingy tavern…

And then our adventurers were off!
First, they had to fight some ninjas.
Then convince the hermit to tell them his secrets.
Then fight a werewolf to gain a magic sword.
And go shopping at the local village.
(some of the potions available for sale)
Before getting a final clue from a raven
(and having to cross an unplanned swamp due to spring flooding)
Before finally arriving to fight the Necromancer.

Maciek is a Canadian!

After years of COVID-related delays, Maciek finally got his Canadian citizenship! We threw him a big party with a poutine bar and a Caesar bar and lots of other Canadiana. The attendees all took an online citizenship test, which the vast majority of people failed.

A couple of days later was his birthday, so I made a playable Blokus cake.
